Will be glad to help with Albertieri's book about dance, but doubts he will split the manuscript into two. Rather than the illustrators he suggested, believes Benda might do something for the new book. Willa S. Cather [Stout #384]
Has been too upset by Mr. Scaife's visit to work. Chose Benda on strength of earlier discussions with Scaife. Benda has put a lot of time into the project and has planned twelve drawings and completed three. Now Scaife says they will pay only $150 for the whole set. Can't ask him to do more than three for that amount. Misunderstanding is her fault; should have made a clear arrangement with Scaife sooner. Could they offer Benda $200 for eight or ten? P.S.: Is The Song of the Lark out of stock? Willa Cather [Stout #399]
Chose Benda to do pen-and-ink drawings after seeing his drawings for Jacob Riis's The Old Town, for which Macmillan paid him $900. Expected to have about a third as many for her book. Benda will not do what they had decided on for the amount Houghton Mifflin is offering. Might do something simpler and easier for that amount. Will work with him on some new ideas. Is cutting the book so it will be very little longer than O Pioneers!. Willa S. Cather [Stout #400]
Sending two Benda drawings with size marked on the margins. Should be full page with wide margins, rather than tail-pieces. Print small on spacious page, all on recto, to give the effect of old wood cuts. Please send proofs of drawings when ready, as a guide to her and Benda in planning the rest. Willa S. Cather [Stout #402]
Thanks for telling her about Miss Bishop [Ferris Greenslet's secretary]. Will expect her on Friday [the 18th]. Willa S. Cather [Stout #405]
Thanks for the proof of the ad. Glad he thinks the book looks good. Willa Cather [Stout #433]
Yes, her copies have arrived, but book shop in Red Cloud has not received its order. Likes the appearance of the volume, though she wishes the paper were a yellower cream color. Willa S. Cather [Stout #434]
Local book shop received only twelve copies out of an order of twenty-five and has sold out. Friends in Toronto [ Hambourgs ] report they can't get it there. Willa S. Cather [Stout #435]
Have copies been sent to New Republic and Bookman? What is the decision about Albertieri's book on dance? Willa S. Cather [Stout #444]
When does he leave for England? Is sending a note from H. L. Mencken, in response to hers thanking him for his review. A Mr. Melchers, of some magazine for booksellers, has been urging her to stick with midwestern material, not shift to New York. W. S. C. [Stout #453]
